Jacob Wester

Jacob Wester has been a professional freeskier for over two decades and has made the steps from his local hill in Stockholm at approximately 80 vertical meters, via X-Games finals in slopestyle and heliskiing shoots for international film companies, to steep descents on the north face of the Aiguille di Midi.
As of today he is also a filmmaker and runs his own production company with his wife Sofia, who has teamed up with him in the mountains as a stills and film photographer in recent years. Jacob has found a strong passion for the skiing and the ski mountaineering culture in Northern Norway, where he has been leading the development of blurring the boundaries between steep skiing and freeskiing.

What made you become a freerider?
I realized that skiing was something I had both a passion for and the drive to become really good at. Steep skiing and freeskiing were the natural branches to direct my skiing towards. There is no other place I feel as free and as unconditionally responsible for myself as in a steep mountainside. In those surroundings I am as small and insignificant as I can be, and the only thing that matters is my own decisions – a very unusual position to be in.
What terrain do you enjoy the most and why?
I prefer steep and exposed areas with perfect powder snow

From your point of view, what about Nuvsvåg makes it a good skiing destination?
Nuvsvåg has sooo many different types of terrain in such a small area, I’ve probably never seen anything like it. The fact that almost every direction has steep and interesting terrain but also terrain suitable for less advanced skiers, makes Nuvsvåg a perfect destination for groups of mixed skill levels. Some say Nuvsvåg a miniature Lyngen. I think that description is very precise.
Your best memory from Nuvsvåg?
The first descent on the east face of Middagsfjellet. The decent is portrayed in the film “The Crown Jewel”.
How do you perceive the Arctic Nuvsvåg team and their facilitation?
Arctic Nuvsvåg is strategically located, to say the least, along the only road through the village. You are never more than a 10-minute drive away from any adventure you want to embark on. Most often you don’t have to drive at all, you just put on your skis outside the door and go straight into the adventure.
Did you encounter any locals adding to your experience?
No, not really. And that’s part of the charm for me. In Nuvsvåg you’re quite lonely, which is unusual and quite unique in such a beautiful and dramatic place.
