Fien van Zwieten

Fien van Zwieten is a female freeskier with Dutch roots, raised between the summits and fjords of beautiful Sunnmøre. From three years of age, she spent nearly every available hour of the weekend at the local ski resort, Overøye Skisenter, only a few minutes away from home.

She was hooked on alpine skiing shortly after, representing Oppdal Alpint Elite until she turned 17. At 19 she entered her first freeski competition in Sogndal and was quickly embraced by the freeski community. Ever since, Fien has become well integrated in the freeski community, competed in and won a few ski competitions, produced a ski film and had the opportunity to travel to beautiful ski destinations – such as Arctic Nuvsvåg.

Fien found the journey that took her from structured alpine skiing to creative and free skiing very educational, something that shines through in her first film project “Home of a Skier”. “What makes freeskiing extra important to me is the creative outlet you can feel, as well as the social cohesion and love for mountains and nature as a playground for me and my friends.”

After retiring from alpine skiing, she realized that it wasn’t alpine skiing she loved – she loved skiing. “Freeskiing has become a platform for me to ski and express myself freely in all possible ways, without having to follow red and blue gates. I feel just as comfortable on the big mountains as in the forest and park, and especially if I can film it all. Hope to see you on screen in the future!”

What terrain do you enjoy the most and why?
I thrive in minigolf areas where you can make endless lines, patch and play until you can’t take it anymore. Nuvsvåg has numerous areas like that, located in various directions that’ll suit any weather that might occur. You are destined to find good conditions somewhere.

From your point of view, what about Nuvsvåg makes it a good skiing destination?
Nuvsvåg possess everything you could possibly want for skiing. Huge steep lines all the way down to the fjord, forest skiing with endless lines through dense forest, and playful minigolf with drops, jumps and cushion lines. Fresh fish bought directly from the fishing boat, cozy locals with exciting stories to tell and unimaginably beautiful scenery from mountains to fjords – and it can only be reached by ferry.

Your best memory from Nuvsvåg?
My best memory from Nuvsvåg is a day packed with powder followed by spontaneous purchases of freshly caught cod by the harbor – which was later grilled in the barbeque hut over an open flame. The evening ended with an hour of sauna – and this was repeated the next day!

How do you perceive the Arctic Nuvsvåg team and their facilitation?
The Arctic Nuvsvåg crew is a unique example of the ski community – enormous love for nature and the mountains, and they want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy their beautiful surroundings. We were invited to dinner and Nuvsvåg stories at their place – and they came over for waffles and coffee in return. We could always contact them if we needed anything or had questions, and they always kept an eye on us when we were on a trip. We felt right at home.

Did you encounter any locals adding to your experience?
Besides the pleasant neighbours, we met a bunch of locals who had been keeping an eye on us. They told us about how the weather and the mountains in the area could behave differently from what we were used to back home. We got a lot of good input and felt both safe and looked after by an entire community!

I am quite certain that you might also bring your surfboard to Nuvsvåg 🙂
