Kollaren

Mount Kollaren towers just east of Arctic Nuvsvåg, and is the most accessible mountain to summit with our basecamp as starting point. The route takes you from sea to summit and offers both steep technical terrain along the way, and phenomenal powder conditions on the plateau stretching to the north west from the summit. Along the way you are surrounded by magnificent nature and views in every direction: the famous Lopphavet to the north, and the Finnmark Alps surrounding Nuvsvåg to the south and west.

ModerateYou can start the route from the porch of your cabin, skinning all the way to the summit in approximately 4 to 5 hours. If you opt for this, the trip starts a few meters above sea level and offers slightly hilly terrain during the first 2.5 kilometers. From there, a steeper intermediate section takes you from about 100 meters above sea level to approximately 700. After 700 vertical meters the climb flattens out, and you follow a large plateau all the way to the summit. This area usually offer brilliant powder conditions for the descent!
The descent can follow the same route as the climb, or you can choose steep descents on the north face and challenging chutes on the west face.

Silas Dillner’s take: It’s long, about 900 meters of riding. A proper legburner in almost any condition. It’s quite wide, allowing for big fast turns, and it’s scenic! Facing the fjord from top to bottom, there are no better turns that are easier earned. The top is the steepest part but also the widest. And you can’t really see the bottom from there either. After about 100 meters the chute gets more narrow and turns to the right for a brief moment before turning slightly to the left again, opening up like a “highway” all the way down to the bottom.
There are lots of good spots to stop on skiers left hand side if you want to approach the run in stages, and wait for each other along the run. For those who plan to put the “pedal to the metal” all the way down, I can only say buckle up and enjoy! You will have a good time and two tired legs.
One thing all skiers should be aware of is the cornice on the skiers right hand side of the drop in at the top. Keep an eye on it! Or cut it down if it’s too big.
The descent following the ascending route offer both soul turns and steep skiing. The first part follows the large plateau spreading from the summit. This area often contain good snow and possibilities for long soul turns. When you turn left and face the village and the fjord, the terrain is steeper and there are several possible lines down. Whether to put the pedal to the metal or to go safe is up to you.
After skiing the top plateu you may opt to head north in stead of skiers left towards the village. This route takes you down a steep and fairly wide chute where you can make large and fast turns with the Lopphavet in sight all the way down.
This line takes you to the road some 3 kilometers from our site. To avoid skinning all the way back, we advice you to arrange transport from the end of the line to basecamp.
