Svartfjellet

Svartfjellet is located at the very bottom of the Nuvsfjorden, and was long considered Finnmark’s highest mountain. Melting of the ice and snow cap on the summit in recent decades has contributed to the mountain no longer being the county’s highest point. Regardless of this, the mountain is a fantastic destination for a top ski trip.

The south-eastern side is steep and offers fantastic chute skiing for those who seek and master this form of skiing. The Swedish trio Jacob Wester, Lovisa Rosengren and Emil Granbom immortalized several lines in this area during their visit to us in the spring of 2024. This is an area that requires experience and very good skiing skills to travel safely.

Just north of the summit, a glacier tongue stretches down towards Brattnesdalen. Here, the powder alarm runs for much of the season, with opportunities for about 1000 altitude meters with uninterrupted soul turns. On the way down, you are accompanied by a vertical rock wall ski right and the Finnmark Alps and fjord view ski left. This descent is suitable for most skill levels, but the hike up requires good fitness and endurance.

This hike starts at the end of County Road 882, about 12.5 km from our base camp. At the end of the road, you grab your skis and glide around Myrnesfjellet and into the beautiful Brattnesdalen valley. From here, you traverse just under 1100 meters of elevation to the top of Svartfjellet.

Different lines decending Svartfjellet

The south east face is for advanced skiers only. In this face you will find narrow and steep chutes that are difficult to access and technically demanding to ski.

This line is one of the longest in our backyard, dropping about 1,000 vertical meters from the summit towards Brattnesdalen. Leaving the summit, you slide slow and easy in mellow terrain facing north before turning skiers right. During the right turn the glacier-like decent reveals itself. From this point it’s all about fast and big turns and enjoying the moment!
