Saltwater fishing

Every year between a hundred and a thousand halibut are being caught in the area between Stjernøya and Silda/Loppa island.

There are plenty of fishing opportunities throughout the whole year. The main cod season is from March to April. At this time of the year the cod arrives the area filled with roe, and it is the peak season for the local commercial fisheries. Do not let the calendar trick you, this far north it will still be winter, so be prepared for the weather to change significantly in a matter of minutes. It can be calm and sunny and feel like spring, but in just a few moments the warm sun can turn into a blizzard. You should also be aware that there might be a day or two where the weather won’t allow you to go out fishing. But I promise you – the fishing is amazing!

In May to July the weather is normally calm and stable and we have the bonus of midnight sun with daylight 24/7. The main cod season will be over, but you still could land a monster-cod. This is however a great time for catching the “torpedo” of the ocean, the saithe – also known as coalfish and pollock. There is nothing like catching one with a spinning rod – they are usually up to 15 kg and that will sure help with the adrenaline! Also in the depth is the redfish lurking, and we start to see the halibut arriving the area in shoals.

If you dream of catching a giant halibut, August and September is a great period. The ultimate test for any fisher is a good fight with one of these magnificent beasts.

The Nuvsvaag area from Stjernøya to Silda/Loppa is probably the best area to catch halibut in Norway. No other place has there been caught more halibut then here. The Loppa platou is the perfect place for fishing halibut. You will get halibut up to 30-40 kg throughout the whole fishing season in the shallow waters, but from August the really huge beasts starts to emerge from the deep ocean. Maybe you will be fortunate enough to test your fishing skills and battle the beast that is the halibut.

For many of our guests visiting Arctic Nucscaag is their first encounter with the halibut. You can in fact catch them in the harbour and in our fjord throughout the year. So far the biggest Halibut caught here was 60 kg and we see lots of Halibut ranging up to 60-70 kg.

No matter which season you choose to visit us, you will have an unforgettable fishing experience and the very best hospitality. We like to consider ourselves as very friendly and helpful hosts who will do what we can to make your stay outstanding and unforgettable.
